Book Description
Historically, philosophers of biology have tended to sidestep the problem of development by focusing primarily on evolutionary biology and, more recently, on molecular biology and genetics. Quite often too, development has been misunderstood as simply, or even primarily, a matter of gene activation and regulation. Nowadays a growing number of philosophers of science are focusing their analyses on the complexities of development, and in Embryology, Epigenesis and Evolution Jason Scott Robert explores the nature of development against current trends in biological theory and practice and looks at the interrelations between development and evolution (evo-devo), an area of resurgent biological interest. Clearly written, this book should be of interest to students and professionals in the philosophy of science and the philosophy of biology.

Review
'The dust jacket of Embryology, Epigenesis, and Evolution suggests a target audience of philosophers of science and of biology, but I hope the book will be more widely read. It might start a productive exchange between biologists and philosophers on how to overcome the limitations of our knowledge.' Science

'… exceptionally lucid'. Notre Dame Philosophical Reviews

'Robert is a well published philosopher of biology who has tackled what he sees as genomania in the disciplines of developmental and evolutionary biology. … Robert switches back and forth from philosophical analysis to biological examples, which I found to be an interesting and intellectually stimulating format. … Robert presents his arguments clearly and concisely … I recommend that you read this book for its philosophical analyses and, if you are not already, start taking development seriously.'
语言: English
ISBN-10: 0226500810

Book Description
In the life sciences, there is wide-ranging debate about biodiversity. While nearly everyone is in favor of biodiversity and its conservation, methods for its assessment vary enormously. So what exactly is biodiversity? Most theoretical work on the subject assumes it has something to do with species richness - the number of species in a particular region - but in reality, it is much more than that. Arguing that we can not make rational decisions about what it is to be protected without knowing what biodiversity is, James Maclaurin and Kim Sterelny offer in "What Is Biodiversity?" a theoretical and conceptual exploration of the biological world and how diversity is valued. Here, Maclaurin and Sterelny investigate not only the origins of the concept of biodiversity, but also how that concept has been shaped by ecology and more recently by conservation biology. They explain the different types of biodiversity important in evolutionary theory, developmental biology, ecology, morphology, and taxonomy and conclude that biological heritage is rich in not just one biodiversity but many. Maclaurin and Sterelny also explore the case for the conservation of these biodiversities using option value theory, a tool borrowed from economics. An erudite, provocative, timely, and creative attempt to answer a fundamental question, "What Is Biodiversity?" will become a foundational text in the life sciences and studies thereof.

A Parting of the Ways: Carnap, Cassirer, and Heidegger. Michael Friedman. Chicago: Open Court, 2000.

ISBN-10: 0812694252

Product Description
Philosophy is deeply divided between two hostile camps: analytic philosophy (dominant in the U.S. and other English-speaking countries) and continental philosophy (dominant in Germany and France). In this volume, Friedman explores the common origin of analytic and continental philosophy, showing how social and political events intertwined and influenced philosophy during the early twentieth-century.
Friedman gives a general overview of the philosophical issues of the period, paying special attention to the relationships among three key twentieth-century philosophers: Rudolf Carnap, Ernst Cassirer, and Martin Heidegger. Already polarized by their philosophical disagreements, the approaches of Carnap and Heidegger-now practiced largely in isolation from one another-were further split apart by the rise of Naziism and the resulting emigration of all influential German-speaking philosophers except for Heidegger. While the radical directions taken by Carnap (analytic philosophy) and Heidegger (post-modernism) have been hugely influential, Friedman enters a plea on behalf of Cassirer's "middle way" as a bridge between the dead ends now reached in both analytic and continental philosophy.

The end of philosophy, the overcoming of metaphysics, and the destruction (or deconstruction) of western thinking are notions which are becoming increasingly influential. Yet there is a growing need to scrutinize the dependence of these ideas on Heidegger's conception of the history of Being.

In the first and final chapters, Heidegger's history of Being is contrasted with Hegel's history of Spirit, from which it has sometimes been inadequately distinguished. The experience which gave rise to the recognition of the history of Being and which was foreign to Hegel - was, in Heidegger's formulation, that of the lack of a word. for Being. This phrase indicates how for Heidegger the experience of the breakdown of language is not negative; it introduces the conception of philosophy as the naming of Being at the same time as separating us from it.
An account of the impetus which drove Heidegger to this understanding of his experience is developed through a reading of his essay on technology and his 'dialogue' with the poets Holderlin and George. His attempts to reread his essays Plato's Doctrine of Truth and What is Metaphysics? In terms of the experience of concealment and silence at the heart of philosophical discourse are also explored. They illuminate the significance of the transformation of language for our own rereading of the tradition.

Robert Bernasconi studied and subsequently taught at the University of Sussex before moving to the University of Essex in 1976. He has published essays on Hegel, Derrida and Levinas, as well as Heidegger, and is currently editing a selection of Gadamer's paper on art and aesthetic consciousness.

The Preface to the Principles of the Philosophy of Right (Berlin, 1820) is one of Hegel's most politically engaged texts: next to a half-scientific, half-popular discourse about the method he employs in this work, it contains Hegel's position with regard to the actual political situation in Prussia in 1820. The text even shows some similarities to a manifesto.

For a good understanding of this Preface a precise explication of its structure is essential, as well as a historical reconstruction of the political and ideological background, an explanation of all its details, and an indication of its many implicit references. Many misunderstandings about Hegel's alleged conservatism, liberalism, fascism or pre-Marxism can so be refuted and an answer is given to the question of what a philosophy like this one has to offer with regard to political decisions and criticism. On the other hand, it also makes clear to which degree Hegel's thinking in this Preface has yielded to the pressure of non-philosophical powers.
书名: The Kantian Sublime and the Revelation of Freedom
作者: Robert R. Clewis (Author)
出版社: Cambridge University Press; 1 edition (April 27, 2009)
语言: English
ISBN-10: 0521516684
ISBN-13: 978-0521516686

Book Description
In this book Robert R. Clewis shows how certain crucial concepts in Kant's aesthetics and practical philosophy - the sublime, enthusiasm, freedom, empirical and intellectual interests, the idea of a republic - fit together and deepen our understanding of Kant's philosophy. He examines the ways in which different kinds of sublimity reveal freedom and indirectly contribute to morality, and discusses how Kant's account of natural sublimity suggests that we have an indirect duty with regard to nature. Unlike many other studies of these themes, this book examines both the pre-Critical Observations and the remarks that Kant wrote in his copy of the Observations. Finally, Clewis takes seriously Kant's claim that enthusiasm is aesthetically sublime, and shows how this clarifies Kant's views of the French Revolution. His book will appeal to all who are interested in Kant's philosophy.

Review
"This is a comprehensive and insightful treatment of the Kantian sublime. It convincingly links Kant's aesthetic discussions of the sublime to both his moral philosophy and his political perspective. Toward that end Clewis emphasizes the role of enthusiasm in the sublime and provides exceedingly nuanced analyses of the various senses of disinterestedness and interest that help to elucidate how the aesthetic can have moral import." -- Rudolf A. Makkreel, Charles Howard Candler Professor of Philosophy, Emory University

"In this learned, acute, and lucid book, Robert Clewis supplements recent discussion of connections between Kant's aesthetics and his ethics with a demonstration of the tie between his aesthetics and his politics, convincingly establishing a relation between Kant's concepts of the sublime and of enthusiasm as a positive political force. Along the way, he also throws new light on Kant's views about freedom, interest and disinterestedness, respect, and republicanism, and illuminates Kant's attitude toward the French Revolution. This is a must read for all students of Kant's aesthetics, moral philosophy, and political philosophy." -- Paul Guyer, Murray Professor in the Humanities, Department of Philosophy, University of Pennsylvania
Book Description
Since its original publication in 1929, Martin Heidegger's provocative book on Kant's Critique of Pure Reason has attracted much attention both as an important contribution to twentieth-century Kant scholarship and as a pivotal work in Heidegger's own development after Being and Time. The work is significant not only for its illuminating assessment of Kant's thought but also for its elaboration of themes first broached in Being and Time, especially the problem of how Heidegger proposed to enact his destruction of the metaphysical tradition and the role that his reading of Kant would play therein.

Review
"... one of Heidegger's most important and extraordinary works.... indispensable for anyone interested in Heidegger's thought as well as in current trends in hermeneutics, ethics, and political philosophy." -- Interpretation

"Kant and the Problem of Metaphysics is among the most important readings in this century of Kant's Critique of Pure Reason. This authoritative English translation will play an important role in determining Heidegger's reputation in the coming years." -- Choice

"Heidegger's interpretation of Kant remains a challenging way to address the issues that both Kant and Heidegger saw as crucial.... In reading [Kant and the Problem of Metaphysics] we can struggle with some basic issues of human existence in the company of two great minds." -- International Philosophical Quarterly

In this path-breaking work, Susan Buck-Morss draws new connections between history, inequality, social conflict, and human emancipation. Hegel, Haiti, and Universal History offers a fundamental reinterpretation of Hegel's master-slave dialectic and points to a way forward to free critical theoretical practice from the prison-house of its own debates.

Historicizing the thought of Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel and the actions taken in the Haitian Revolution, Buck-Morss examines the startling connections between the two and challenges us to widen the boundaries of our historical imagination. She finds that it is in the discontinuities of historical flow, the edges of human experience, and the unexpected linkages between cultures that the possibility to transcend limits is discovered. It is these flashes of clarity that open the potential for understanding in spite of cultural differences. What Buck-Morss proposes amounts to a “new humanism,” one that goes beyond the usual ideological implications of such a phrase to embrace a radical neutrality that insists on the permeability of the space between opposing sides and as it reaches for a common humanity.

Georg Lukacs’ study of Hegel's early works up to and including The Phenomenology of Mind is perhaps his most significant and original contribution to the history of philosophy. After 'the political set-backs of the 1920s, the attacks on History and Class Consciousness and his own repudiation of the work, Lukacs found himself in Moscow where some of his major literary essays were written. There he was one of the first to read Marx's Economic and Philosophic Manuscripts of 1844 and this provided one of the impulses for the present work which is both a major revaluation of Hegel and a step forward in Lukacs' own thought.

Lukacs revises commonly held notions about Hegel's early theological period and shows that its importance lies not in Hegel's religious views, but in his discussion of 'positivity', the forerunner bf the later concept of 'externalization' or 'alienation'. Drawing on many texts hitherto neglected, such as the Realphilosophie of 1803-4 and 1805-6, Lukacs defines Hegel's philosophy by a contrast with the crucial doctrines of Kant, Fichte and Schelling, thus demonstrating both, the continuity in German idealism, of which Hegel is the culmination, and the rupture in the tradition which made possible the further development to Marx.
Book Description
Relativism about knowledge or truth has always provoked the ire of philosophers. Recently, however, Alasdair MacIntyre has observed that 'relativism … is one of those doctrines that have by now been refuted a number of times too often.' Along with MacIntyre, Hilary Putnam and Richard Rorty have also argued that while relativism may be problematic, there are valuable insights in it that philosophers need to take notice of. This book reveals exactly what those relativistic insights are, and where they are to be found within the works of these three leading late-twentieth-century American philosophers.
书名: The Rupture of Time: Synchronicity and Jung's Critique of Modern Western Culture
作者: Roderick Main (Author)
出版社: Routledge; 1 edition (September 1, 2004)
语言: English
ISBN-10: 1583912282
ISBN-13: 978-1583912287

Book Description
Why was the idea of synchronicity so important to Jung?

Jung's theory of synchronicity radically challenges the entrenched assumptions of mainstream modern culture in the West. It is one of the most fascinating yet difficult and discomfiting of Jung's psychological theories.
The Rupture of Time aims to clarify what Jung really meant by synchronicity, why the idea was so important to him and how it informed his thinking about modern western culture. Areas examined include:

how the theory fits into Jung's overall psychological model and the significance of its apparent inconsistencies

the wide range of personal, intellectual and social contexts of Jung's thinking on the topic

how Jung himself applied the theory of synchronicity within his critique of science, religion, and society

the continuing relevance of the theory for understanding issues in contemporary detraditionalised religion.

Focusing closely on Jung's own writings and statements, this book discloses that the theory of synchronicity is not an inconsequential addendum to analytical psychology but is central to the psychological project that occupied Jung throughout his professional life. This much-needed clarification of one of Jung's central tenets will be of great interest to all analytical psychologists and scholars engaged with Jungian thought.

About the Author
Roderick Main is Lecturer in Psychoanalytic Studies at the University of Essex, and the editor of Jung on Synchronicity and the Paranormal (Routledge, 1997).
书名: Jung, Psychology, Postmodernity
作者: Raya Jones (Author)
出版社: Routledge; 1 edition (June 21, 2007)
语言: English
ISBN-10: 0415379482
ISBN-13: 978-0415379489

Book Description
Jung, Psychology, Postmodernity explores points of confluence and, more often, contradictions between Jungian and postmodern ideas.

Throughout the book Raya Jones examines how personal meaning emerges in human activity. Jung addressed this in terms of symbol formation, with particular attention to dreams, myths, art and other fantasy productions. Postmodern psychologists tend to address issues of meaning in terms of peoples self-understanding and identity construction, with a focus on self-positioning in actual conversation or on autobiographical narratives. Jones draws a line of critical comparison between postmodern psychology and Jung’s descriptions of the symbolic dimension, myth, and the structure of the psyche. The book culminates with an evaluation of Jung’s psychic energy concept, for which there is no direct counterpart in postmodern psychology.

Jung, Psychology, Postmodernity is an original critique of two key moments in the history of psychology. It will be welcomed by Jungians, as well as psychotherapists, and students of psychology.

About the Author
Raya A. Jones is a social and developmental psychology lecturer at Cardiff University. She is a committee member of the International Association for Jungian Studies.
书名: Jung, Irigaray, Individuation: Philosophy, Analytical Psychology, and the Question of the Feminine
作者: Frances Gray (Author)
出版社: Routledge (January 25, 2008)
语言: English
ISBN-10: 0415431034
ISBN-13: 978-0415431033

Book Description
How do philosophy and analytical psychology contribute to the mal-figuring of the feminine and women? Does Luce Irigaray's work represent the possibility of individuation for women, an escape from masculine projection and an affirming re-figuring of women? And what would individuation for women entail?

This work postulates a novel and unique relationship between Carl Jung and Luce Irigaray. Its central argument, that an ontologically different feminine identity situated in women's embodiment, women's genealogy and a women's divine is possible, develops and re-figures Jung's notion of individuation in terms of an Irigarayan woman-centred politics. Individuation is re-thought as a politically charged issue centred around sex-gendered difference focussed on a critique of Jung's conception of the feminine.

The book outlines Plato's conception of the feminine as disorder and argues that this conception is found in Jung's notion of the anima feminine. It then argues that Luce Irigaray's work challenges the notion of the feminine as disorder. Her mimetic adoption of this figuring of the feminine is a direct assault on what can be understood as a culturally dominant Western understanding. Luce Irigaray argues for a feminine divine which will model an ideal feminine just as the masculine divine models a masculine ideal. In making her claims, Luce Irigaray, the book argues, is expanding and elaborating Jung's idea of individuation.

Jung, Irigaray, Individuation brings together philosophy, analytical psychology and psychoanalysis in suggesting that Luce Irigaray's conception of the feminine is a critical re-visioning of the open-ended possibilities for human being expressed in Jung's idea of individuation. This fresh insight will intrigue academics and analysts alike in its exploration of the different traditions from which Carl Jung and Luce Irigaray speak.

Frances Gray teaches philosophy at the University of New England, Armidale, NSW, Australia. She has contributed to the Spring Journal, Cosmos and History and Australian Feminist Studies. This is her first book.
